Here’s the challenge: list the chronological events of Jesus’s resurrection.

That’s it.  Create any narrative that includes every detail given by the Bible.

Feel free to be as generous as possible.  So, for example, when Matthew says an angel appears to Marys, then Mark says there is a young man in a white robe – maybe that’s the same thing. Then, when Luke says there are two men in dazzling clothes, and John mentions no angels…that’s allowed!  Maybe there were 2 angels and one just looked like a dude in a robe.  There’s no rule that says any particular author has to mention all the angels that showed up, even if it does seem peculiar to say “an angel appeared,” when it was really two, and you just decided to give one the cold shoulder.

Also feel free to completely fabricate any additional details to fill in the story. Also utilize memory wiping, time travel, or teleportation for any of the characters involved, as necessary. In fact, assign any superpowers needed to make the story work, while keeping it as believable as possible and incorporating all the details from the Bible.

I’ve even done the work of listing all the references below.  Feel free to cut and paste and try it for yourself.  I haven’t been able to get these stories to line up yet.  Please let me know if you can create a version that works!

Matthew 28:

  • Now after the Sabbath, as the first day of the week began to dawn, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary came to see the tomb. (Matthew 28:1)
  • And behold, there was a great earthquake; for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat on it. (Matthew 28:2)
  • His countenance was like lightning, and his clothing as white as snow. (Matthew 28:3)
  • And the guards shook for fear of him and became like dead men. (Matthew 28:4)
  • But the angel answered and said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified.” (Matthew 28:5)
  • “He is not here; for He is risen, as He said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay.” (Matthew 28:6)
  • And go quickly and tell His disciples that He is risen from the dead, and indeed, He is going before you into Galilee; there you will see Him. Behold, I have told you.” (Matthew 28:7)
  • So they went out quickly from the tomb with fear and great joy, and ran to bring His disciples word. (Matthew 28:8)
  • And as they went to tell His disciples, behold, Jesus met them, saying, “Rejoice!” So they came and held Him by the feet and worshiped Him. (Matthew 28:9)
  • Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid. Go and tell My brethren to go to Galilee, and there they will see Me.” (Matthew 28:10)
  • Now while they were going, behold, some of the guard came into the city and reported to the chief priests all the things that had happened. (Matthew 28:11)
  • When they had assembled with the elders and consulted together, they gave a large sum of money to the soldiers, (Matthew 28:12)
saying, “Tell them, ‘His disciples came at night and stole Him away while we slept.'” (Matthew 28:13)
  • “And if this comes to the governor’s ears, we will appease him and make you secure.” (Matthew 28:14)
  • So they took the money and did as they were instructed; and this saying is commonly reported among the Jews until this day. (Matthew 28:15)
  • Then the eleven disciples went away into Galilee, to the mountain which Jesus had appointed for them. (Matthew 28:16)
  • When they saw Him, they worshiped Him; but some doubted. (Matthew 28:17)
  • And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. (Matthew 28:18)
  • Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, (Matthew 28:19)
  • teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen. (Matthew 28:20)

John 20-21:

  • Now on the first day of the week Mary Magdalene went to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb. (John 20:1)
  • Then she ran and came to Simon Peter, and to the other disciple whom Jesus loved, and said to them, “They have taken away the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid Him.” (John 20:2)
  • Peter therefore went out, and the other disciple, and were going to the tomb. (John 20:3)
  • So they both ran together, and the other disciple outran Peter and came to the tomb first. (John 20:4)
  • And he, stooping down and looking in, saw the linen cloths lying there; yet he did not go in. (John 20:5)
  • Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb; and he saw the linen cloths lying there, (John 20:6)
  • and the handkerchief that had been around His head, not lying with the linen cloths, but folded together in a place by itself. (John 20:7)
  • Then the other disciple, who came to the tomb first, went in also, and he saw and believed. (John 20:8)
  • For as yet they did not know the Scripture, that He must rise again from the dead. (John 20:9)
  • Then the disciples went away again to their own homes. (John 20:10)
  • But Mary stood outside by the tomb weeping, and as she wept, she stooped down and looked into the tomb. (John 20:11)
  • And she saw two angels in white sitting, one at the head and the other at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain. (John 20:12)
  • Then they said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?” She said to them, “Because they have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid Him.” (John 20:13)
  • Now when she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, and did not know that it was Jesus. (John 20:14)
  • Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?” She, supposing Him to be the gardener, said to Him, “Sir, if You have carried Him away, tell me where You have laid Him, and I will take Him away.” (John 20:15)
  • Jesus said to her, “Mary!” She turned and said to Him, “Rabboni!” (which is to say, Teacher). (John 20:16)
  • Jesus said to her, “Do not cling to Me, for I have not yet ascended to My Father; but go to My brethren and say to them, ‘I am ascending to My Father and your Father, and to My God and your God.'” (John 20:17)
  • Mary Magdalene came and told the disciples that she had seen the Lord and that He had spoken these things to her. (John 20:18)
  • Then, the same day at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in the midst, and said to them, “Peace be with you.” (John 20:19)
  • When He had said this, He showed them His hands and His side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. (John 20:20)
  • So Jesus said to them again, “Peace to you! As the Father has sent Me, I also send you.” (John 20:21)
  • And when He had said this, He breathed on them, and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit.” (John 20:22)
  • “If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.” (John 20:23)
  • Now Thomas, called the Twin, one of the twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. (John 20:24)
  • The other disciples therefore said to him, “We have seen the Lord.” So he said to them, “Unless I see in His hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and put my hand into His side, I will not believe.” (John 20:25)
  • And after eight days His disciples were again inside, and Thomas with them. Jesus came, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, “Peace to you!” (John 20:26)
  • Then He said to Thomas, “Reach your finger here, and look at My hands; and reach your hand here, and put it into My side. Do not be unbelieving, but believing.” (John 20:27)
  • And Thomas answered and said to Him, “My Lord and my God!” (John 20:28)
  • Jesus said to him, “Thomas, because you have seen Me, you have believed. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” (John 20:29)
  • And truly Jesus did many other signs in the presence of His disciples, which are not written in this book; (John 20:30)
  • but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name. (John 20:31)
  • After these things Jesus showed Himself again to the disciples at the Sea of Tiberias, and in this way He showed Himself: (John 21:1)
  • Simon Peter, Thomas called the Twin, Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two others of His disciples were together. (John 21:2)
  • Simon Peter said to them, “I am going fishing.” They said to him, “We are going with you also.” They went out and immediately got into the boat, and that night they caught nothing. (John 21:3)
  • But when the morning had now come, Jesus stood on the shore; yet the disciples did not know that it was Jesus. (John 21:4)
  • Then Jesus said to them, “Children, have you any food?” They answered Him, “No.” (John 21:5)
  • And He said to them, “Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some.” So they cast, and now they were not able to draw it in because of the multitude of fish. (John 21:6)
  • Therefore that disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” Now when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his outer garment (for he had removed it), and plunged into the sea. (John 21:7)
  • But the other disciples came in the little boat (for they were not far from land, but about two hundred cubits), dragging the net with fish. (John 21:8)
  • Then, as soon as they had come to land, they saw a fire of coals there, and fish laid on it, and bread. (John 21:9)
  • Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish which you have just caught.” (John 21:10)
  • Simon Peter went up and dragged the net to land, full of large fish, one hundred and fifty-three; and although there were so many, the net was not broken. (John 21:11)
  • Jesus said to them, “Come and eat breakfast.” Yet none of the disciples dared ask Him, “Who are You?” – knowing that it was the Lord. (John 21:12)
  • Jesus then came and took the bread and gave it to them, and likewise the fish. (John 21:13)
  • This is now the third time Jesus showed Himself to His disciples after He was raised from the dead. (John 21:14)
  • So when they had eaten breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me more than these?” He said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I love You.” He said to him, “Feed My lambs.” (John 21:15)
  • He said to him again a second time, “Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me?” He said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I love You.” He said to him, “Tend My sheep.” (John 21:16)
  • He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me?” Peter was grieved because He said to him the third time, “Do you love Me?” And he said to Him, “Lord, You know all things; You know that I love You.” Jesus said to him, “Feed My sheep.” (John 21:17)
  • “Most assuredly, I say to you, when you were younger, you girded yourself and walked where you wished; but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will gird you and carry you where you do not wish.” (John 21:18)
  • This He spoke, signifying by what death he would glorify God. And when He had spoken this, He said to him, “Follow Me.” (John 21:19)
  • Then Peter, turning around, saw the disciple whom Jesus loved following, who also had leaned on His breast at the supper, and said, “Lord, who is the one who betrays You?” (John 21:20)
  • Peter, seeing him, said to Jesus, “But Lord, what about this man?” (John 21:21)
  • Jesus said to him, “If I will that he remain till I come, what is that to you? You follow Me.” (John 21:22)
  • Then this saying went out among the brethren that this disciple would not die. Yet Jesus did not say to him that he would not die, but, “If I will that he remain till I come, what is that to you?” (John 21:23)
  • This is the disciple who testifies of these things and wrote these things; and we know that his testimony is true. (John 21:24)
  • And there are also many other things that Jesus did, which if they were written one by one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that would be written. Amen. (John 21:25)

Acts 1:1-12:

  • The former account I made, O Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do and teach, (Acts 1:1)
  • until the day in which He was taken up, after He through the Holy Spirit had given commandments to the apostles whom He had chosen, (Acts 1:2)
  • to whom He also presented Himself alive after His suffering by many infallible proofs, being seen by them during forty days and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God. (Acts 1:3)
  • And being assembled together with them, He commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the Promise of the Father, “which,” He said, “you have heard from Me; (Acts 1:4)
  • for John truly baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.” (Acts 1:5)
  • Therefore, when they had come together, they asked Him, saying, “Lord, will You at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?” (Acts 1:6)
  • And He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or seasons which the Father has put in His own authority. (Acts 1:7)
  • But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” (Acts 1:8)
  • Now when He had spoken these things, while they watched, He was taken up, and a cloud received Him out of their sight. (Acts 1:9)
  • And while they looked steadfastly toward heaven as He went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel, (Acts 1:10)
  • who also said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand gazing up into heaven? This same Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will so come in like manner as you saw Him go into heaven.” (Acts 1:11)
  • Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, a Sabbath day’s journey. (Acts 1:12)

1 Corinthians 15:3-8

  • For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, (1 Corinthians 15:3)
  • and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures, (1 Corinthians 15:4)
  • and that He was seen by Cephas, then by the twelve. (1 Corinthians 15:5)
  • After that He was seen by over five hundred brethren at once, of whom the greater part remain to the present, but some have fallen asleep. (1 Corinthians 15:6)
  • After that He was seen by James, then by all the apostles. (1 Corinthians 15:7)
  • Then last of all He was seen by me also, as by one born out of due time. (1 Corinthians 15:8)
